Standard DS-1® is a global, industry-adopted standard for drilling and completions technology. Bureau Veritas developed the first edition of Standard DS-1® in 1992 to address the lack of industry standards for downhole drilling tools. As the industry developed and changed, Standard DS-1® was updated in second, third, and fourth editions based on our experience and our sponsors’ input. Bureau Veritas continues to keep pace with our industry, and we are proud to release the fifth edition of Standard DS-1® in August 2020.

The six-volume set addresses the following:

Volume 1: Specifications for newly manufactured tubular drilling products
Volume 2: Risk-based design resources for prevention of drill string failure
Volume 3: Inspection of used tubular drilling and completions equipment
Volume 4: Specialty-tool maintenance (inspection, assembly, and testing) procedures

DS-1® Volume 3: Drill Stem Inspection

Standard DS-1®, Volume 3 has given our industry an inspection standard for used tubular drilling products and contains:

- Six risk-based DS-1® inspection programs, called “Categories,” to aid the inspection buyer in aligning the inspection to the operation
- Many inspection methods with detailed procedures that guarantee the high-quality results we want
- Clear and flexible acceptance criteria for many components including drill pipe and connections; new drill pipe sizes, grades, and proprietary connections; HWDP; drill collars; and subs
- Updated calibration controls and full-length ultrasonic procedures to aid the inspectors in understanding and applying the requirements

DS-1® Volume 4: Drilling Specialty Tools

Standard DS-1®, Volume 4 establishes an industry-wide standard for the maintenance and qualification of drilling and completions specialty tools. Coverage includes:

- Design limits and constraints for clear communication to the customer
- Requirements that the vendor’s inspection, assembly, and testing procedures cover all the important areas that affect the quality and consistency of the tools
- Specific requirements for many different tool families, now including various completions tools and handling equipment

DS-1® Volume 5: Bit Inspection Technical Standard

With bits of different designs coming from many different sources, it has always been difficult to ensure the quality of the bits without damaging the innovation or ignoring the variation within this important industry. With DS-1® Volume 5, the industry has a way to guarantee that bit inspections are properly performed.

Unlike other standards that “cover” bits by simply referring to the wear ratings given in the IADC Drilling Handbook, Volume 5 is based on deep research with bit manufacturers, repair shops, and users. It covers bits of many different designs, and it focuses on the areas that are important for performance. It gives clear definitions of “good” and “bad” which are based on good engineering and extensive experience. It now includes requirements for roller cone bits and the cutting structures of downhole reamers. It gives you the power to prevent bit failures.

DS-1® Volume 6: Aluminum Drill Pipe Inspection

As our industry pushes the boundaries, we look towards new materials used in new ways to get the extra capabilities we need. Aluminum drill pipe is one of those frontier technologies—an idea that’s been around for a long time, recently coming into more serious consideration. DS-1® Volume 6 provides the infrastructure support for these new strings.

With the help of multiple aluminum drill pipe manufacturers and users, DS-1® Volume 6 was built to give consistently high-quality results. It covers drill pipe assemblies with aluminum tubes and shrink-fit steel tool joints, making sure your operation goes according to plan.

DS-1® Volume 1: Drilling Tubular Product Specifications

Standard DS-1®, Volume 1 is a specification for newly-manufactured tubular drilling products that provides the following:

- Specifications for two manufacturing levels: Standard (a reflection of the requirements from various API standards) and Critical (to allow for greater control and stringency when needed)
- Improved communication between operators and manufacturers by using the Standard DS-1® order form to eliminate errors
- Updated coverage, including metallurgical requirements for sour-service components

DS-1® Volume 2: Drill Stem Design & Operation

Standard DS-1®, Volume 2 provides risk-based design resources for prevention of drilling equipment failure and includes the following:

- Tables of the capacities and dimensions you need for drill pipe, heavyweight drill pipe (HWDP), and drill collars
- Descriptions of the overload capacity calculations and failure-prevention processes
- Research on failure prevention topics like slip-cut severity and its impact on fatigue life, rig-equipment calibration and the effect it has on your uncertainty, and how inspection and design can and should work together
- Considerations for casing wear, stuck pipe, and other operational issues
- Curvature Index and Stability Index, tools a designer can use to lower the risk of fatigue failure and improve efficiency
- An updated Connection Fatigue Index to aid in choosing the right BHA connection design to maximize overall fatigue life
