Isocyanate Analysis
Isocyanates are a family of highly reactive, low molecular weight chemicals that are widely used in the manufacture of paints, coatings, adhesives and foams. They are increasingly attractive due to their expansion and adhesion properties in combination with other chemicals when forming polymers.
Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes, gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Direct skin contact can also cause marked inflammation. Isocyanates can additionally sensitize workers, making them subject to asthma and other respiratory issues. These health effects have gained so much attention across the US that OSHA initiated the establishment of a National Emphasis Program (NEP) on isocyanates in 2013.
Bureau Veritas analyzes air samples for the presence of a wide variety of isocyanates according to applicable
OSHA and NIOSH guidelines. Our accredited laboratory works closely with media manufacturers to provide the best passive field collection techniques. Some of these media devices include the leading passive samplers, filters and impingers. Samples are analyzed by GC, LCMS and HPLC instrumentation to provide the ultimate sensitivity for each compound.
Bureau Veritas has worked with global chemical companies to establish Industrial Hygiene sampling guidelines and has assisted members of the American Chemistry Council with establishing best practices.
