ASME Section IX - In Person (2 days)

OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the requirements for material joining procedure and performance qualifications, focusing primarily on welding qualifications
  • Explain the applicability of qualification rules for different welding processes
  • Discuss the documentation requirements for procedure and performance qualifications
  • Describe the requirements for supervision of qualification testing
  • Explain the certification and availability of qualification documents
  • Describe performance qualification continuity and requalification requirements
  • Discuss the use of Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPSs)

WHO THE COURSE IS FOR?

This course will be helpful for anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of how to apply ASME rules for qualification of welding procedures and welder performance. It will be especially helpful for novice ASME Code users, but will also give benefit to experienced users that want to stay abreast of any code development over the years. This course will be of value to anyone that needs to meet the Section IX training requirements described in QG-106.

COURSE CONTENTS

This course provides a general overview of how to apply ASME Section IX rules for the qualification of welding procedures and personnel. Course contents include the organization of the book, responsibilities of various parties, and applicability to the various material joining processes. We will focus primarily on the rules associated with welding. Brazing and plastic fusing will be briefly discussed. Material includes discussions on Part QG general requirements, Part QW documentation requirements, the process to qualify joining procedures, definitions of terms used in Section IX, an explanation of the 3 types of variables, rules for revisions to documents, limits of Section IX applicability, required testing for qualification, and use of the various tables in Section IX. A “How to” session on reviewing and writing a welding procedure is conducted to help participants understand how to apply the concepts that are addressed. Additionally, performance qualifications for individuals applying material joining processes will be discussed, including responsibilities of various parties, performance variables, documentation requirements, required testing of qualification test specimens including mechanical and volumetric (UT or RT), acceptance criteria, performance qualification continuity, and requalification requirements. A “How To” session on completing performance qualification documents using the applicable performance variables and their limitations is conducted.

Note: Payment must be received prior to the first day of the course to attend.

A Certificate of Attendance with professional development hours (PDH) is issued.  *The training seminars will be held from 8 AM to 4:00 PM local time. Except where noted.  Attendees are responsible for their own hotel rooms. If a special room rate is available, we will send you that information.
*Times may vary based on class participation.

Attire is casual.

SCHEDULED INSTRUCTORS - One of the following instructors will teach Courses:

Paul Shanks

Paul has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and 17 years’ experience in the pressure equipment industry. Paul has designed pressure vessels for use in the pharmaceutical industry, and heat exchangers. He also worked to support the British Navy’s Nuclear Submarine program designing components and developing facility capability and spent time as a manufacturing engineer developing and sharing best practices on the cutting edge of welding and vessel fabrication technology. Paul is a National Board Commissioned Authorized Inspector who primarily works in the technical division of our home office to provide support our clients, and inspectors on all ASME and NBIC subject matters. Paul has attended and participated in NB and ASME committee meetings since 2017.

Stacey Marks ,P.E., C.W.I

Stacey has over 30 years of experience working with welding and pressure vessel codes including 5 years at a NDE lab certifying welders through mechanical testing, and 25 years working for a global pressure vessel manufacturer producing over 4,000 ASME U-stamped vessels a year. During her tenure at the manufacturing company, she held roles of Quality Engineer, Engineering Manager, and Quality Manager. She has successfully written and implemented ASME and PED QC programs for the manufacturing and repair of pressure vessels. Stacey is a Professional Engineer and a Certified Welding Inspector and has extensive practical experience with Section VIII construction and Section IX welding & supervision. She is a National Board Commissioned Inspector and has participated in the ASME and NB Codes & Standards Committees since 2013. She is a member of both the ASME Standards Committee for Pressure Vessels, and the ASME Standards Committee for Welding, Brazing, and Fusing. She is Chair of Section VIII sub-group Fabrication& Examination, and Chair of Section IX sub-group Brazing. In addition to her expertise with the ASME Codes, she has an easy-going style and an ability to communicate and explain the code in a simplified manner.
