Natural Health Product Testing

Natural Health Products (NHPs), dietary supplements and nutraceuticals are defined by regulations as vitamins, minerals, herbal remedies, homeopathic medicines, traditional medicines such as Chinese medicine, probiotics and other products such as amino acids and essential fatty acids.

Approval for launching a new product requires a toxicology (pre-market) review, which assesses the product’s safety, efficacy and quality through testing and research. It also requires site licensing, which ensures manufacturing, importing, labelling, packaging and distribution processes are compliant with Good Manufacturing Practices. Following approval, manufacturers have a responsibility to continuously ensure product safety and quality through laboratory analysis of raw materials through to finished products.

Bureau Veritas' food laboratory provides the following testing services for NHPs:

  • Microbial Purity – this test utilizes USP methods 2021/2022 to assess purity. It also confirms whether a sample meets the established specification for microbiological quality through microbial enumeration and by determining the absence of specified microorganisms. Preparatory testing can be performed to ensure that the method allows detection of the microorganism in the presence of the product.
