Comprehensive Robotic Crawler Inspections of High Mast Light Poles

Do you own, operate, maintain, and/or inspect High Mast Light Poles? Have you ever found it difficult to assess how an inspection firm records & measures any deterioration progression over time from previous inspections? Prior to the introduction of Bureau Veritas’ robotic PoleScan® service, this concern has regularly been expressed by the Industry as a problem that needs to be solved as previous inspections were performed through the use of an inspector at the base of the HMLP equipped with binoculars to guesstimate the location of corrosion detected or the condition of the luminaires.

Bureau Veritas’ PoleScan® service now alleviates this number one concern of the Industry as PoleScan® provides a comprehensive inspection report with a 360° High Definition Close Visual Inspection of the pole sleeves, seams, mast arms, and luminaires through the use of four HD cameras attached to the PoleScan® robotic crawler.

As a result of utilizing PoleScan®, your High Mast Light Pole inspection reports will now provide you with the inspection data that you require to make the most cost-effective and informed decision on how to best protect your High Mast lights, including:

•    Complete digital report with documentation of all findings to track any progression of corrosion or other damage during subsequent inspections

•    A full-length video providing a 360° view of all components of an HMLP inspected

•    Digital photographs providing a close up of each anomaly detected

•    The direction orientation (North, South, East, West) and the elevation of all damage or findings

The PoleScan® service provided by Bureau Veritas’ exceeds FHWA and AASHTO inspection criteria for a High Mast Light Pole. As safety is an absolute at Bureau Veritas, PoleScan® offers the following benefits:

  • No more distracted drivers on a busy Interstate trying to watch a drone fly around a High Mast Light Pole;

  • Improved safety for the Inspector and motoring public;

  • No more lane closures, bucket trucks or climbers.

In addition to providing a robotic inspection of the high mast light pole sleeve, seams and luminaires, Bureau Veritas also performs the following inspections of your HMLP’s, including:

  • Utilization of our proprietary inspection method called ShafTest. ShafTest is a portable Ultrasonic Testing (UT) flaw detection system designed specifically to improve current UT techniques for monitoring the condition of shafts and pins to detect cracking in anchor bolts. ShafTest collects a 3D ultrasonic signature of the anchor bolts that can be stored for later retrieval and analysis. For more information, please download the attachment called “ShafTest”.

  • Using a proprietary BVNA developed UT procedure specifically created to detect toe cracks in HMLP’s and power transmission line poles in shaft-to-bracket and shaft-to-base plate welds. There are several contributing factors to why cracks propagate at this location after galvanization and they can be very difficult to detect in the fabrication shop and in the field without the right UT procedures. These welds are fracture critical that have no redundancy and may be at risk of catastrophic failure. BVNA’s proprietary UT procedure specifically focuses on this industry-known phenomenon so that as an owner of high mast light poles, you will be able to understand if your HMLP’s are experiencing these very hard to detect toe cracks that could cause it to fall over and cause further damage.

Never again will you have to struggle with trying to review the inspection notes of an inspection report and question the current condition of your HMLP. As an educated and sophisticated owner, you can now have a full-length video of the entire inspection performed and any resulting still photographs for permanent documentation. Now that’s Shaping a World of Trust!
