Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances

PFAS Testing

PFAS compounds against abstract background

PFAS testing is conducted to detect the presence of man-made per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances that are gaining a substantial amount of recognition as environmental contaminants. Public concern for PFAS compounds has significantly increased due to their extreme persistence in the environment, ability to migrate from soil to water, ability to bioaccumulate, human and ecotoxicity potential and adverse human health effects. Bureau Veritas has been at the forefront of developing methods that detect PFAS compounds as they continue to impact the globe.

Our PFAS Testing Accreditation

Bureau Veritas is accredited for PFAS Testing by the US Department of Defense's ELAP Program for EPA Draft Method 1633.

EPA 1633 provides a standardized and validated approach for PFAS monitoring in all matrices. Our accreditation covers all 40 PFAS under EPA 1633 for water and solid matrices. Whether it is tissue, landfill leachate, or sediment, EPA 1633 can now be used to provide high-quality data consistent with PFAS testing best practices.

Who Needs PFAS Testing?

PFAS testing may be necessary for drinking water systems, as well as industries that manufacture, use or dispose of PFAS and need to comply with environmental regulations. These industries include, but are not limited to, textile and carpet manufacturing, food packaging, feed processing equipment, ski and snowboard wax, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, cosmetics, construction products, adhesives, polymers, refrigerants, electronics, firefighting, and wastewater treatment.

What PFAS testing methods do I need for my project?

Bureau Veritas offers three test methods: PFAS by LC/MS/MS, Total Oxidizable Precursor Assay (TOPs) and Total Organofluorine Analysis by Combustion Ion Chromatography  (TOF-CIC).
Each of these analytical approaches offers distinct advantages for environmental practitioners. At the same time, the limitations of each need to be considered when assessing their utility in different situations.

Many matrices and products do not have a validated or standardized approach to analyze PFAS. Bureau Veritas has a team of highly experienced PFAS chemists who utilize the latest analytical techniques to provide a range of testing options, including screening and confirmatory tests for various PFAS compounds.
